Steve Walker takes on the Monster

My first attempt at a middle distance triathlon, the Ely Monster.

Great swim in the river apart from being kicked, punched and elbowed in the face quite a few times. The bike course involved a ride out of Ely before completing 2 loops of a pan flat course,  although it didn’t feel like it due to it being so exposed and having strong winds on the day. The run course had changed from recent years and was a small loop followed by 4 loops round Ely city centre. Great for spectators but tough on the legs as it had 3 significant climbs per lap. A really well organised event with a great atmosphere and set in a very pretty location. I’m already considering doing this one again next year. I was aiming for under 5hrs so was very pleased with my result.
